Baby Steps

I can say that this has probably been the most exciting week for the month of August. Each day had its own story and as much as I had wanted to write about each of them, I didn’t even have the luxury of time to do so. If you have noticed, my entries for this week have been quite short. But today I wanted to share with you something that surprised me and at the same time something that I have learned a lesson from.

A friend of mine shared a link on my wall on Facebook. It was a write-up on the history of the UST Psychology Society Talent Pool. This was a group under the organization that I was active in during college. I was surprised to find that my name was actually mentioned there! To quote, “HISTORY: Created by Abigail Agamata in 2006, “Psychology Society-Talent Pool” (PS-TP) spun around traditional Church pieces and was purely concentrated on vocals…”

As I continued to read it, there were two other names that caught my attention and they also made me smile. They were the two young ladies from whom I have seen the same passion I had for music during the time that I was still in college. When I had revived the Talent Pool, it was quite unfortunate that our group did not get much support because the organization was more focused on other things like outreach programs, etc. I was the quietest among the officers and the person who had the least connections and so you could say that we had our humble beginnings and sort of struggled to be recognized. But with all the smaller groups under the organization (dance troupe, outreach committee, etc.), I knew that there were many talented people out there who were just waiting to be recognized for it. Thankfully, I handled the cultural committee and found good members who were willing to work hard because we were just starting out. Before I graduated, our talents had been showcased even with the limited opportunities. I left college wishing I could have done more for the group but I was also happy because I know that I have given an avenue for those talented people to be recognized.

After graduation, I haven’t had the chance to go back to school and update myself on what has been going on with the organization, specifically the Talent Pool. But when I read this write-up, I was glad that the Talent Pool is still alive and was kept alive by those two young ladies. I am also happy because I realized that maybe in my own small way, even if it wasn’t very successful at first, I have provided a way for them to express their love and passion for music and have inspired them to continue to do what they love doing even if there were obstacles along the way.

Thank you, Melanie and Sacha, for your passion and dedication. I hope that those after you would continue to do the same. Because of this I learned that small beginnings can truly make a big difference. The worth of what you have done cannot be measured just by how famous or successful you have become; more than that, it is even more rewarding when you know that you have inspired people to simply pursue what they love doing without imposing any pressure or stress.

So if you would like to start something that is very close to your heart but are afraid because of the little resources you have, do not worry. You will never know what the future holds unless you start now. Today is a gift from God. Let’s make the most out of it. 🙂

Matthew 25:21 “His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.'”
